CrazyTalk Ep17 - Theresa “Darklady” Reed - Sex and the Net

5/31/2010: Crazy Talk: "Sex and the Net"

A conversation with Portland's own bon vivant of the pansexual, Theresa “Darklady” Reed @TheDarklady.

My guest is a long-time blogger, writer and event coordinator, The Darklady!  The one-and-only provocateur, erotic event producer and free expression activist. Yes, I said “erotic”, as in sex, as in put the kiddies to bed and NSFW, unless you work at your neighborhood adult book store (do those even still exist?). We’ll discuss sex positive online resources and how social networks have impacted peoples use of  these sites. We’ll also discuss her upcoming (no pun intended) Masterbate-A-Thon event, now in it’s tenth year.

From Her Bio:
Theresa “Darklady” Reed is a long-time regular contributing writer for AVN, a blogger for HuffingtonPost.com, and president of Darklady Productions, Inc., based in Portland, Oregon. She is a current FSC board member, as well as FSC liaison to the newly formed Free Speech Alliance board and to the adult entertainment industry for the Woodhull Freedom Foundation.
When not hosting wildly innovative, pansexual fundraising events, Reed’s work appears in various erotica and sexuality anthologies, including Stanford Press’ “Prostitution and Pornography: Philosophical Debate about the Sex Industry.” She is also an accomplished screenwriter, public speaker, and sex educator who has run for public office twice.

CrazyTalk Ep16 - Lorelle VanFossen - On Wordpress and the Social Web

5/23/2010: Crazy Talk: "Lorelle on WordPress"

After a post-Webvisions party, I was very pleased that Lorelle VanFossen @LorelleonWP agreed to chat with me Sunday night on Crazy Talk. We were both a bit exhausted from the week's activities, but had a far reaching conversation about social web communications, past, present, real-time, dead sea scrolls, & how to handle it all (from Lorelle's tweet after the show). I also appreciated her thoughts on the real-time web vs. the limited capacity we have to internalize, prioritize and find the meaning of all these streams of data for our lives. Don't forget: you get to put the oxygen mask on first!

Lorelle VanFossen is considered one of the top bloggers, and women bloggers, in the world. She is the host of the Lorelle on WordPress, providing WordPress and blogging tips for bloggers of all levels. She is also the community manager and part of the Woopra team, and producer and official "disruptive thinker" of Bitwire Media.

CrazyTalk Ep15 - Betsy Richter - Re-redoing Media

5/9/2010: Crazy Talk "Re-redoing Media"

It was my pleasure to have Betsy Richter @betsywhim join us this week via Skype, for a follow-on conversation after my appearance on her new podcast Redoing Media on pdx.fm. At the top of the show, we also touched on her digital journo bio and got an update on OurPDX. Since I'm a strong believer in not duplicating work, I'll post Betsy's own description of the conversation right here:

"I sat down Sunday night to record an unexpected podcast via Skype as the featured guest on Dr Normal’s new Crazy Talk podcast & we ended up with this..."

"From what I remember, both Doc and I were witty, opinionated and oh, so chatty (an hour and a half of chat, to be specific). But don’t take it from me – as one Twitter reviewer said afterwards:
“If you care about journalism, listen to this podcast. Best discussion I’ve heard in months.”

CrazyTalk Ep14 - Amber Case and Andy Beach - The Value of Work

5/2/2010: Crazy Talk “Shop Class as Soulcraft” the Value of Work

What is the value of work- of the trades and crafts, and those with an intimate knowledge of their machines? Has higher education been relagated to churning out indebted, middle-class “knowledge workers” performing to ambiguous standards of excellence in their cubicles? And what does this mean for the Facebook generation? Is our future cast in a virtual world of self-indulgence, lacking any self-reliance?

Join me on the next Crazy Talk with our esteemed guest panelists:

Amber Case @caseorganic
“Amber Case is a Cyborg Anthropologist and tech consultant researching prosthetic culture. She studies the interaction between humans and computers and how our relationship with information is changing the way cultures think, act, and understand their worlds. Case wrote her thesis on cell phones and their technosocial sites of engagement.”

Andy Beach @andybeach
“Andy Beach is a digital media professional who combines technology, creativity, and business strategy. He is also the author of Real World Video Compression, a book that seeks to explain the world of compression in plain English. Andy brings significant expertise and experience in the field of product strategy & marketing, video compression and rich media solutions.”

CrazyTalk Ep11 - Will Radik and Abraham Hyatt - Journo's vs Bloggers "Fight!"

Crazy Talk for November 22 2009

CrazyTalk Ep11 - In the first 30 minutes of tonight's Crazy Talk we catch up with Will Radik, who's gearing up for another 7th Planet Picture show (link unavailable). We get some backgound on his media-making activities: live on-stage, blogging and podcasting. We discuss his summer stint as a journo-blogging intern at Blogtown, and it's here that we bring in Abraham Hyatt for a recap of Saturday's We Make The Media conference. We hash away at the controversy arising between journo's of the old and new persuasions. Should we write academic position papers to win a grant or should we adopt the tech start-up mentality, dive right in and do-it-our-own-damn-selves? When Will brings up the Free Geek model of providing equipment, training and support for those with technology needs, it got me thinking how this model would be applied to journalism and making media. Journos and media makers would have access to the technology but more important, participants would gain valuable interaction and training on the best practices of news gathering, reporting and storytelling. A win-win for journos and techies.

CrazyTalk Ep10 - Abraham Hyatt - All The Journalism

Crazy Talk for November 18 2009

He's the founder of Journalism Camp and is currently working toward a non-profit, community news source in Portland. The upcoming We Make the Media conference is a start in this direction. Abraham is the type of person that I can sit and listen to talk/think for hours at a time. I also have no problem challenging him with the tough questions. Listen in, I think this is a thought-provoking discussion.

CrazyTalk Ep8 - Faddah - Experiments "The One That Got Away"

CrazyTalk for November 15 2009

CrazyTalk Ep8 - Yeah, so... sometimes an experiment (and Crazy Talk is an experiment) gets away from you. It comes to life in a hideously awful way and runs around the lab for a while before you man up, pull out the shotgun and put the poor thing out of its misery. Apparently, yours truly doesn't possess the evil-genius-Fu to kill off one of his own, so I let this thing go until the townsfolk pitchforked it for me. And boy, what a pitchfork it was. From the tweets, emails and podcasts, the message was clear: "Kill it! Kill it NOW!".
We start off with an attempt at a thoughtful discussion, all to the Avant-garde styling's of Skype connection difficulties. Later we get into... what? what's that you say??
"Kill it! Kill it NOW!"

CrazyTalk Ep7 - Bobby "Fatboy" Roberts - Radio, Podcasting and Web Media Business

CrazyTalk for November 11 2009

CrazyTalk Ep7 - When a guest like Bobby "Fatboy" Roberts comes on to #crazytalk you know it'll be a strong show. But even though he's a comedy master of all-things-pop-culture, I really wanted him to come on and talk in-depth about producing broadcast media vs. media for the web. You see, when Cort and Fatboy first caught my attention, I was intrigued. There was even a half written blog post that I had cooked up with their show as one of the anchor thoughts. How did 2 DJ's on a radio station I never listened to catch my attention? Because they were a crossover act- posting a full plate of podcast content daily as their radio show was relegated to 5 minute bursts in between the playlist and many commercials. And when the 'midnight massacre' wave of firings took place at their station, they seemed the best equipped with a backup plan to continue on with their show.
Of course, this is a longer Crazy Talk tonight. We do warm up with some banter and geek pop culture references- but stay tuned. You'll hear how Cort and Fatboy launched into podcasting and why. We'll talk at length about The Radio Business and the future of making money on web-based media. Like my earlier conversations, this is one you won't want to miss...

CrazyTalk for November 4 2009

CrazyTalk Ep4 - Today I'm joined by Portland transplant from a 'land down under' Mike McClure of The McClure. We focus the conversation on all-things-Portland-tech and the culture scene. We get into the pros and the cons of what it's like to be a Portland techie or creative developer, especially for those who choose to live and work here. Can we turn the negative aspects of our under(VC)funded "lifestyle" region into something new? Can we survive the on-going financial depression and play on our strengths as a community? Will we turn our side projects into sustainable business? "Tune in" to hear our thoughts on this, and more!

CrazyTalk Ep1 - Verso, CamiKaos, BetsyWhim - Silly Rants, Blogging, Podcasting and Journalism

CrazyTalk for November 1 2009

CrazyTalk Ep1 - Verso (Kelly Guimont), Cami Kaos, BetsyWhim (Betsy Richter)- Silly Rants, Blogging, Podcasting and Journalism.

It's Sunday the 1st of November 2009, which means it's NaPodPoMo time and I'm scrambling to get something posted. Actually, my problem isn't podcasting, per se- I've grown production into my own cottage industry in the last year (and there's so much more to come). My challenge is going back, checking my NaPodPoMo feed from last year and logging back into the ning site. Also, where will I park the files? My videos- you do know that since last year we've all moved to video & live streaming in a massive tectonic shift- can be hosted on a free blip.tv account. But my audio is still on a paid-for service. So, I'm thinking about using archive.org for the audio. Which brings up another question: do I post both audio and video to the same feed? It seems easier to me than getting yet another iTunes setup. Well, here goes...

Join docnormal for his NaPodPoMo 2009 daily show "Crazy Talk", live from Portland Oregon!
